On Monday, November 25th the City of Marion invited members of the community, business leaders, elected officials, and program partners to a special ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the renovations of Tower Square Plaza in downtown Marion. Because of the weather, the ribbon cutting was moved to the City Hall Council Chambers.

Mayor Michael Absher welcomed the crowd and talked about the history of the project and through the dedication and talent of the architects and engineers, the finished project reflected the initial designs presented to the city in the summer of 2020.

Horner Shifrin Associate Vice President Brian Zeigler and Grant Guthman with Samron talked about the phases of the project, which not only created a welcoming space for community engagement, but updated infrastructure to support downtown businesses and allow for future growth.

Chamber Executive Director Karen Mullins talked about the impact of this project on the Marion business community and how it sets a tone for the growth of Marion and our region.

Mayor Absher closed the program with expressing his gratitude to the downtown businesses for their patience during this project and reminded citizens to visit the space and support the businesses during the holiday season. Councilmen and project partners then gathered for the ribbon cutting.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The revitalization of Tower Square Plaza came to life through several phases of meticulous planning and execution, involving countless hours and expertise from a multitude of specialists. This collaborative effort has resulted in a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone – from the 7,000+ motorists who use the new roundabout daily to the numerous bicyclists, and countless pedestrians who traverse around Tower Square.

When Williamson County was incorporated and Marion was established as the county seat in 1839, the Benson family generously donated this land that has become a hub for community and commerce. Over the past 165 years, the original design has served Marion well, standing as a testament to our city’s enduring legacy.

Today, this renovation honors that vision while ensuring that Downtown Marion meets the needs of future generations. A portion of the funding for this transformative project was provided by the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program. Their patience and support have been integral to building a bright, strong, and safe downtown that future generations can enjoy.
